The New York Mets Took Care of Business in Game One of their Marlins Series

In their last two wins, the Mets have done most of their damage in one inning.

New York scored one in the first but found themselves down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth. The Mets were finally able to get to Roddery Muñoz.

Muñoz has control issues and the Mets were able to exploit them. Francesco Alvarez got on base without taking the bat off his shoulders by looking at four straight balls. Jeff McNeil was up next. The second basemen did what he has done so well lately.

McNeil worked a great at bat. He fouled off a tough two strike pitch. On 3-2, McNeil got the pitch and location he wanted. He sat on the curveball and drilled it to right field, regaining the lead for New York.

The Mets started again as Harrison Bader worked a walk then Francisco Lindor hit a rocket down the line. Bader scampered all the way home and Lindor made it to third for his first triple of the year.

Brandon Nimmo came to the plate after a Mark Vientos walk. Nimmo has been in a terrible slump since the All Star break. Going into yesterday, Nimmo had the biggest dropoff in MLB in WRC+ between before and after the All Star break.

Yesterday, though, Nimmo took a big swing and delivered. Nimmo ambushed the first pitch he saw from George Soriano. Nimmo absolutely smacked it. The ball made it to the second deck in a hurry. Nimmo, who usually just drops his bat and puts his head down, stayed in the box and admired his shot. He really seemed to savor the moment.

The outfielder had 16 home runs before the All Star break, but he could not get one in the second half. Getting the first one must have felt like a giant weight had been lifted off his back.

New York had a comfortable 7-2 lead after four and they never looked back.

Sean Manaea gave the Mets what they needed. The lefty pitched seven strong innings, allowing three runs. Manaea, importantly, threw strikes when he was given the lead and did not allow free passes that would let the Marlins back in the game.

Jose Buttó finished Miami off with two quality innings.

It would have been great to see New York continue to pour on runs, but it is difficult when you already have such a cushion.

New York are back at it today at 4:10. Let’s see if they can get back to stacking wins.
