'All Gas!' How'd ‘Tricky’ Mahomes Look vs. Lions Preseason?

    By Mike Fisher,

Given the myriad accomplishments of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his participation in a so-called "meaningless'' exhibition game like the one staged in NFL Preseason Week 2 on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium hardly registers as a blip on his career radar screen.

But if it's important to him - and this thing was important enough for coach Andy Reid to have the QB and other first-teamers involved - then it's important to us.

So "blip on the radar'' screen or not, analysis, here we come.

The Chiefs added top draft pick Xavier Worthy to the offense this offseason, offering Mahomes now has a genuine deep threat. They also have, of course, Travis Kelce and other rather unique weaponry ... and it all fits in Mahomes' stated desire to try to "push the envelope, to push the ball downfield, trying to make sure that we stay in that attacking mindset. ...

"You can't let off the gas. You have to keep pushing.'

So ... how'd he and his offense look? What was accomplished?

Worthy caught a 62-yard pass. And Kelce caught a behind-the-back toss from the QB.

Mahomes had fun on his way to going 8 of 14 for 93 yards passing.

Eventually? All eyes will be on the Chiefs in the opening two weeks of the season as the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals come to Arrowhead in what looms as a tough first fortnight for the defending champs.

But for now? Mahomes accomplished a goal. … foot pressed to the preseason floor.
