Atlanta Falcons HC Explains Decision to Sit QB Michael Penix Jr. for Second Preseason Game

The Atlanta Falcons are facing more questions about their decision-making when it comes to rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

The decision to draft Penix with the No. 8 overall pick this past year in the first place was a strange one, considering that Atlanta signed veteran QB Kirk Cousins this offseason. Now, the Falcons are facing some questions about their usage of Penix, choosing not to play him in the second preseason game of the year.

After Penix threw for 104 yards in his preseason debut, Falcons coach Raheem Morris says that he saw enough from the rookie not to require more reps in the preseason.

While Penix did look good in the first game of the year, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't want to continue to get him reps at the NFL level and have him grow in the offense.

Of course, none of this makes sense when you consider that Penix — one of the oldest QBs in the rookie class — is being asked to sit for potentially several years while Cousins plays out his career.

In general, the whole situation seems to be a bit messy, and every decision is met with questions. Fortunately for Falcons fans, there is a ton of talent on the roster right now, and Atlanta is among the most popular sleeper picks in the NFC this season.
