Travis Kelce Roasts Patrick Mahomes While Explaining Viral Behind-The-Back Pass

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce linked up for an unexpected highlight. During the Kansas City Chiefs' preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Mahomes unleashed the behind-the-back pass to Kelce for a first down. After trying it out in practice, it finally appeared in the game.

As it turns out, that play was not a designed play but one born out of spontaneity... and some pettiness. Mahomes revealed that Kelce ran the wrong route. He joked that the behind-the-back pass was to "spite" his teammate.

Kelce also said that the highlight was not exactly planned. In his explanation, the Chiefs star also had some jokes about his QB.

"You know he has the voice thing," Kelce said, doing an impersonation of Mahomes' voice afterward. "He kinda mumbled out the play, I couldn't hear it. I was trying to decipher what he was saying. Before I knew it, the ball was snapped."

Mahomes revealed in his interview earlier that Kelce was supposed to run a flag route. Kelce, for his part, was seemingly trying to block for Mahomes before he saw that behind-the-back pass coming his way.

The Mahomes-Kelce connection has long been praised due to the chemistry between the two. Both Chiefs stars have stressed the fact that their ability to see the same thing on the field and adjust has helped them greatly. It's good to see that the connection still works even if the line's choppy.

The Chiefs are hoping to see more of that spontaneity working out in their favor this season. Their quest for the fabled three-peat starts in 2024. Another Super Bowl win would skyrocket both Mahomes and Kelce in the GOAT conversation.
