Bills' Ray Davis Shines In Preseason Showing vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Buffalo Bills offense will have a different feel in 2024 under Joe Brady, and with more of an effort made not to have Josh Allen play the role of Superman, a lot will fall on the running backs.

With James Cook emerging as a Pro Bowler in his second season last year, he will need help and that could come in the form of rookie Ray Davis.

In his first preseason game against the Chicago Bears, Davis only totaled two yards from five rushes but had several big gains called back due to penalties.

Well, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Davis didn't have such trouble.

He would finish his day's work with 58 rushing yards from eight carries and averaged a cool 7.2 yards a carry as he tormented the Steelers' defense.

On one drive, Davis had six carries for 49 yards as he looked explosive, elusive and at home in the Buffalo offense under Brady.

With the Bills offense in a transition phase, especially from a receiver standpoint, more emphasis will be placed on the run game. When Brady took over from Ken Dorsey after Week 10 last year, the Bills offensive dynamic shifted to running the football more.

Now that Cook has established himself as the leading rusher, Buffalo could have a potent one-two punch out of the backfield with a player like Davis, who is a physical runner, can make defenders miss, and is elusive in open space.

While it is only preseason, the Bills surely have to feel good about their running back situation, with Davis showing he has all the tools to be a viable contributor on offense in 2024.
