The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially named first-round draft pick Graham Barton as their starting center for Week 1 of the 2024 season, underscoring the team’s commitment to enhancing their offensive line. After a competitive training camp and two preseason games, Barton, a former Duke standout, emerged as the clear choice to anchor the Buccaneers' line.
Barton’s journey to securing the starting job wasn’t straightforward. Although he primarily played left tackle in college, Barton had to adjust to the center position, where he had limited experience. Competing against incumbent center Robert Hainsey , who started the past two seasons, Barton needed to demonstrate his adaptability and effectiveness in the new role.
Throughout training camp, Barton and Hainsey alternated reps with the first-team offense, each vying for the starting spot. However, Barton’s performances during the preseason set him apart. His ability to generate push in the run game, maintain solid pass protection, and effectively execute blocking schemes showcased his readiness for the NFL .
Following the Buccaneers’ preseason loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars , it became evident that Barton had the edge. Head coach Todd Bowles hinted at the decision, noting the team's deliberation process. Shortly after, it was confirmed that Barton would be the starting center via X, marking a significant step forward in the Buccaneers' efforts to improve their offensive line.
With Barton securing the starting role, Hainsey will transition to a backup position, providing depth and versatility along the offensive line. As the Buccaneers prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders , their offensive front is now led by a promising rookie center poised to contribute significantly to the team's success.
