The New York Giants are witnessing the rapid rise of rookie defensive back Tyler Nubin, who is making significant strides in his quest to secure a starting safety spot. Initially, it seemed that Dane Belton, with two years of NFL experience, had a firm grasp on the role.

However, Nubin's recent performances, combined with his return to full health, have shifted the dynamics of the Giants' secondary.

Belton, who played 295 snaps last season and recorded 21 tackles, was considered the frontrunner, especially given Nubin's early absence due to injury. Despite Belton's experience and versatility in both free and strong safety positions, his performance last season was inconsistent, marked by a 22.9% missed tackle rate and conceding 141 yards in coverage (per Pro Football Focus ).

While Belton excels near the line of scrimmage, Nubin's instincts as a ball hawk and his ability to read opposing quarterbacks make him a natural fit for a variety of coverage-heavy roles, whether he's over the top or blanketing tight ends.

Nubin’s return to action in the preseason, particularly in games against Detroit and Houston, has demonstrated his potential. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen acknowledged Nubin's growth, stating , "He continues to improve each day. The one thing with him is he’s finally out there. He’s healthy."

As the Giants prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, Nubin appears poised to start at free safety, with Belton likely serving as the primary backup for both safety spots. New York's emphasis on integrating young talent like Nubin into key positions is indicative of their long-term rebuilding strategy.

While the defense shows promise, general manager Joe Schoen may seek additional reinforcements through the waiver wire or free agency to bolster the secondary as the regular season approaches.
