Chiefs' 'Over The Top Speed' Opens Up Entire Offense,

    By Adam Schultz,

The Kansas City Chiefs' offense was missing a speed element last season, and despite winning the Super Bowl, changes were made in the offseason.

Xavier Worthy was drafted and Marquise Brown was signed in free agency to give Patrick Mahomes two bonafide home-run threats.

And we saw the benefits of Worthy's speed against the Detroit Lions when he cleared out space for Justin Watson after taking multiple Lions defenders with him on a deep route, which allowed an easy completion to Watson for Mahomes.

And it is that kind of benefit that Mahomes believes will be huge for the Chiefs offense this season.

"I mean, y'all saw it in training camp, and you can see it already in the game, is once you hit them over the top with that speed, it helps open up the whole entire football field,” Mahomes said . “So it's going to help everybody in the entire offense, having him [Worthy] having Hollywood [Brown] having Rashee [Rice] being able to break loose and so it opens up the entire offense which is something that I think will be big for us this year.”

As we saw against Detroit, having deep threats in Worthy and Brown opens up the field for the other receivers, making their impact twice as damaging .

Given how quickly Worthy can get downfield, if he's on a go route, the defense simply must account for him; otherwise, it's a walk-in touchdown. When they do sit back, it opens up the underneath routes for Mahomes to pick up easy completions.

When you have Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore running around underneath, Mahomes can go anywhere with the football.

Chasing a historic three-peat, the Chiefs have another potent weapon in their arsenal—one that is nearly impossible to cover on a consistent basis—pure speed.
