Mavs WATCH: Kessler Edwards Shows Potential in Offseason Scrimmage

The Dallas Mavericks made several needle-moving roster moves this offseason by adding Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Quentin Grimes into the mix. All four players seem poised to help the Mavs defend their Western Conference championship in hopes of making it to the NBA Finals for a second consecutive season.

However, one roster move that might be flying under the radar is the signing of 24-year-old prospect Kessler Edwards. Earlier this month, the Mavs signed Edwards to a Two-Way contract, meaning he'll split time between the big league in Dallas and the G League in Frisco with the Texas Legends.

Over the weekend, Edwards participated in an open-run scrimmage that showcased some of the potential the Mavs were intrigued by.

Standing at 6-8 and possessing a seven-foot wingspan, Edwards has the physical tools to be an effective 3-and-D role player in the NBA. Last season for the Sacramento Kings, Edwards only appeared in 54 games for an average of 5.1 minutes per contest, but he managed to shoot 38.5 percent from beyond the arc during that time while also playing solid perimeter defense.

Our own Drew Johnson recently wrote about how Edwards could have a similar development to former Mavs fan-favorite Dorian Finney-Smith . Although both players share similar builds and skills, Edwards has a leg up on Finney-Smith when it comes to experience at a young age. Edwards already has three years of NBA experience under his belt at age 24, while Finney-Smith was just in his rookie season as an undrafted free agent at that same age.

Finney-Smith didn't become the reliable 3-and-D player he is today until the 2019-20 season, when he was 26 years old, going on 27. The Mavs are hoping Edwards can have a similar success story to tell when it's all said and done.
