Brandon Aiyuk's contract drama continues as the star wide receiver has recently been involved in trade rumors. However, nothing has come to fruition, and he remains with the San Francisco 49ers. With the rumor mill staying hot, ESPN's Adam Schefter shares how he believes the saga will play out.
During a guest appearance on The Pat McAfee Show , Schefter reveals that he believes the "most likely scenario" is that Aiyuk will stay in San Francisco . The popular reporter thinks Aiyuk and the 49ers will eventually figure out a new contract despite the ongoing trade rumors.
"The 49ers wanna get this deal done with Brandon Aiyuk & they've made him multiple offers.. I still think the more likely scenario is that he stays in San Francisco."
Trade talks have dwindled down since the 49ers initially announced that Aiyuk is available. Rumors suggest that the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cleveland Browns have been involved in trade talks with San Francisco.
Aiyuk has been seeking a new contract throughout the entire offseason. The 49ers have seemingly not come close to an offer that excites the star wide receiver. San Francisco is considered a Super Bowl contender this season, and Aiyuk could play a large role in that.
Aiyuk and the 49ers have been far apart in contract negotiations. The latest update regarding the negotiations is that San Francisco is willing to pay him $28 million annually for three years, according to Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated. However, Aiyuk is seeking more guaranteed money for years four or five of the deal.
"The 49ers have reportedly agreed to the first three years of a contract extension that will pay Aiyuk less than $28 million per season. Aiyuk apparently wants a significant adjustment to the fourth and final year of the deal, presumably more guaranteed money."
The star wide receiver reportedly turned down a trade that would have sent him to New England. Aiyuk turned down a contract offer from the Patriots that would have paid him $28.5 million annually.
Aiyuk is entering his fifth year in the NFL and proved to be an asset for the 49ers. Last season, Aiyuk served as a top pass option for quarterback Brock Purdy, finishing with 75 receptions, 1,342 yards (career-high), and seven touchdowns.
Perhaps a contract between Aiyuk and the 49ers can be done in the coming weeks. San Francisco kicks off the regular season on September 9 against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.
