Olympics Star Gabby Williams Finally Signs With WNBA Team

Team USA had a fairly easy run to the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Then, they ran into France and their breakout star, Gabby Williams, in the final.

The 5-foot-11 forward out of UConn led her country to a silver medal, but she gave the USA a scare, nearly forcing overtime with a last-second shot that was ruled a two, leaving the final score 67-66.

Williams was named to the All-Star Five, which goes to the best five women's basketball players at the Olympics. She was also named the Best Defensive Player of the Paris Games.

On Tuesday, after a successful run in her home country, Williams finally signed with a WNBA team, joining her squad from last year: the Seattle Storm.

The Storm announced that they had signed Williams to a rest-of-the-year contract, meaning she will play with them until the season ends.

Williams was initially selected with the No. 4 pick in the 2018 WNBA draft by the Sky, where she played from 2018-21. She signed with the Storm in 2022 and spent last season there, as well.

In 2022, Williams was named to the WNBA All-Defensive second team, so the league is well aware of her impact on that side of the ball. She also started in all 36 games for Seattle that season but only played in ten the following year.

After the Paris Games, some WNBA players attempted to recruit the free agent to their team, including Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese .

On her way to a silver medal in Paris, Williams averaged 14.8 points on 49.2% shooting, 4.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.8 steals in five games. She had, arguably, her best game against the gold medal winners.
