Vikings provide injury updates on Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson

The Minnesota Vikings could be without key cogs in the offensive machine once the regular season starts as tight end T.J. Hockenson and wide receiver Jordan Addison continue to recover from injuries.

Hockenson is recovering from a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee he suffered in a late regular season game against the Detroit Lions last season and Addison sprained his ankle during last week's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns.

Minnesota sports insider and KSTP's Darren "Doogie" Wolfson said on SKOR North Tuesday morning that Hockenson has "looked a little hesitant at times, a little more so than a week or two ago." Wolfson speculates that the tight end may not return until after the bye week — the earliest being a home game against his former Lions team on Oct. 20 — but nothing has been confirmed by the team.

"I think bottom line with Hockenson, after the bye, does that mean late October? Early November? It's still going to be a bit," Wolfson said.

Robert Tonyan has also been out of practice after suffering back spasms early in training camp, leaving the Vikings with Johnny Mundt, Josh Oliver and Nick Muse as the top options at the tight end position.

As for Addison, Wolfson says the second-year wideout is dealing with a "pretty significant" ankle sprain that could set him back for another week or two. It's theorized that Addison won't be 100% the first game of the season when the Vikings take on the New York Giants on Sept. 8.

"I think [Addison] will be back practicing the Wednesday of Giants week... but I don't know if that ankle is going to be 100% in that moment. This type of ankle injury takes multiple weeks to truly recover from, plus it's one we'll have to keep an eye on once he's back out there," Wolfson said, adding that the injury is "on the right track" to a high ankle sprain.

The Addison injury could mean the Vikings will keep six wide receivers on its 53-man roster when the regular season begins. Justin Jefferson, Trishton Jackson, Jalen Nailor, Trent Sherfield, Brandon Powell and Addison are likely to be that group, if the team decides to keep that many receivers.

Minnesota will likely need some reserves to step up as both Addison and Hockenson continue to work their way back to the gridiron.
