The latest on the ever-churning rumor mill? The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the outside looking in, waiting and waiting for the two "yesses'' that would seal their attempt to trade for San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Aiyuk and the Niners are reportedly meeting again, trying to salvage that relationship. good for them, but ...

This continues the idea from recent reporting that seems to lean in San Francisco’s favor, citing a new contract offer that hits the $30 million threshold, annually. That’s not great news for a Steelers team whose only advantage is the money they can offer Aiyuk.

If San Francisco closes that gap enough, the continuity and proximity to a championship could be a tiebreaker of sorts.

Pittsburgh got more bad news late last week, courtesy of former trade target and 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel.

On “ Up & Adams ,” Samuel was asked about the possibility of leaving. Specifically, he was asked whether his team could win a championship without Aiyuk.

“BA’s gonna be a part of this team,” Samuel said. “So we don’t have to worry about that.”

That sentiment raises a nasty question. The Patriots were in the running here but Aiyuk told them no. The Browns were in the running here but Aiyuk told them no.

What was the point of their involvement if the player was never going to agree?

Maybe this: Maybe the Patriots got used for leverage. And the Browns, too.

Which would suggest ... the Steelers are continuing to be used by Aiyuk for leverage. And if the player doesn't really want to come here? Maybe the 49ers are using the Steelers for leverage as well.

Aiyuk caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season, his second 1,000-yard campaign in as many years. He would be a very helpful addition here.

But if Aiyuk doesn't really want Pittsburgh ? Then Pittsburgh shouldn't really want him.
