Bucs Offense Starting To Come Together' For Baker

    By Adam Schultz,

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have spent a lot of time in the classroom this offseason as the offense learns Liam Coen's new system.

In a scheme that has been called hard and complex, there are a lot of things to account for in Tampa Bay's new setup . Quarterback Baker Mayfield has a lot more on his plate at the line of scrimmage, checking in and out of plays as he sees fit, and that can take a bit of getting used to with so much information coming your way.

But as we turn for the Buccaneers' third preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, Mayfield is content with where the offense is.

“I think we've come a long way," Mayfield said . "Obviously we were very excited from the very beginning, of the pieces we've had, but I think it's starting to come together scheme-wise and players-wise, understanding what we're trying to get done so I'm excited about where we're at but we still haven't played a real game yet so we we'll see once we get out there against Washington but right now it's continue to improve and get ready for week one.”

With things going rather smoothly, only one preseason game is left for the Buccaneers to dot their I's and cross their T's before the regular season begins.

The Dolphins are up next, and while it remains to be seen if any starters will see the field, Baker, who has practiced a lot but has yet to have real NFL snaps in any preseason games, wants to play.

And when he does, he knows what he wants to see from the offense.

"Communication, I think procedurally-wise, that's really what you're looking for in preseason games," Mayfield said. "But for us to be extremely sharp when it comes to the plays we're going to run. Obviously, since we're not all playing that long, to be really dialed in to the first few third-down calls, red zone calls and critical situations that we might have – [to] be really keyed into that, communicate well and execute. No dumb mistakes. Play good offensive football and go from there."

The Buccaneers have been hitting all the right notes so far in preseason, and with the "real" stuff now getting ever closer, Mayfield and the offense will want to find their groove against the Dolphins.

And they hope that everything comes together in a nice package ahead of the Washington Commanders in Week 1.
