Bucs Preseason Week 3: Todd Bowles Looking For 'Continuity'

Through two preseason games, the anticipation has grown for the debut of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' starting group. Ahead of the final such contest against the Miami Dolphins, that is set to come to fruition.

Specifically on the offensive side, there is an excitement to see a first look at this group. The last two weeks have provided a glimpse of offensive coordinator Liam Coen's system with improvement shown in run game and bright spots in the passing attack.

Defensively, there's not too much change expected, but a considerable helping of young players will take on more prominent leadership roles. Most of those pieces will get their first run together under those circumstances.

The second- and third-stringers could see some time, but Friday night's spotlight will shine brightest on the starters.

However, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles is not looking for results. Instead, he has urged continuity, hoping this group rekindles a feel for live action and gets a rhythm going.

"It's not a matter of success its a matter of playing in a game before we play a real game so the continuity on both sides of the ball, the communication needs to be there," Bowles said this week .

Last season, continuity was still in progress at the onset of the season with Baker Mayfield finding his way under center. Tampa Bay started 3-1 but proceeded to lose its four straight comes coming out of its bye week.

The Bucs recovered and managed to win the NFC South. But that breathing room may not be present this time around with the Atlanta Falcons hot in pursuit of that division crown.

In its first six weeks, Tampa Bay will face its two playoff opponents from last season and hit the road for a two-game NFC South road trip. They will need a strong start before hitting a four-game gauntlet in the middle of the season.

If the Bucs display the "continuity" they found at the end of last season, this group, offense and defense alike, should be primed to handle any challenges of adjusting to a new season or a new system.

Like Bowles mentions, Friday night's results are irrelevant, but a proper showing in the dress rehearsal would be most ideal before opening day.
