Drew Bledsoe Roasts Tom Brady Ahead of His NFL Broadcasting Debut This Season

Back in 2001, the world didn't know Tom Brady as they do now. In fact, the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots going into that season was Drew Bledsoe, who had just signed a then-record deal of 10 years, $103 million with the team. Less than two games into the season, Brady took over the starting job from Bledsoe—not due to performance issues, but because of a devastating injury caused by a hard hit from New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis.

We all know how the story played out. The Patriots went on to become one of the greatest dynasties of the modern era, and Brady went on to have the career— and then some—that many had predicted for Bledsoe.

Brady is now nearly two years removed from his playing days, on his second retirement from the NFL, this one much longer than the first, which lasted around six weeks. However, he is still set to be a part of NFL programming from week to week during the 2024 season, only this time in the booth, calling the games.

Naturally, given anything related to Brady, Bledsoe—whose career trajectory was significantly affected by Brady's emergence—was asked on NFL Network's Good Morning Football how he believes the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback will fare as a sports broadcaster.

“Tommy will work it to death," Bledsoe said.

Then, after a sigh, he added, “I’ll be sick of hearing his squeaky a** voice… “

Bledsoe was undoubtedly being tongue-in-cheek, as he and Brady are reportedly on good terms. But perhaps there was some carryover from Bledsoe’s participation in Netflix's The Roast of Tom Brady earlier this year, where he started the show off.

Brady, being Brady, appears to be putting in the work to prepare for the upcoming NFL season in his new role. During the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers preseason game on Aug. 18, Brady was seen in the booth with Fox's Kevin Burkhardt, practicing. He and Burkhardt are slated to be Fox’s No. 1 broadcasting team this season.

Brady's first game in his new gig will be on Sept. 8 during the 4:25 p.m. ET game between the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns.

Who knows—maybe we'll get a review from Bledsoe after Brady's first game. Or maybe it will be another roast.
