Fever Boss Speaks on Kelsey Mitchell Amid Looming Free Agency

Indiana Fever star Kelsey Mitchell is approaching a crucial point in her career as she heads into free agency for the first time at the end of the season.

Mitchell, who has been with the Fever since being selected second overall in 2018, has established herself as one of the premier scorers in the WNBA. Her ability to create her own shot and deadly three-point accuracy make her one of the most coveted players in the league.

As her contract with the Fever ends, speculation is mounting about where she might land next, especially since the team has made huge strides with the arrival of rookie Caitlin Clark and the continued emergence of Aliyah Boston, NaLyssa Smith, and Lexie Hull.

The 28-year-old Mitchell said she's excited for free agency. Fever general manager Lin Dunn acknowledged the two-time All-Star's loyalty and expressed hope that she would stay.

“Kelsey is a classic example of somebody that's been here six or seven years and never been in the playoffs, and that's tough, being in losing seasons,” Dunn said in a report from IndyStar's Chloe Peterson . "She's had a tough time since she's been here.

"Hopefully, these last two years have reassured her the direction that we're going.”

While the Fever are still in danger of missing the postseason once again, they have already equaled their 13 wins from last season with still a dozen games to go.

Dunn said their focus remains on the campaign, but assured that they will address Mitchell's situation in the best way possible.

“When the season's over, we'll sit down and talk about the future,” Dunn said. “I want Kelsey to be happy, and I want her to feel like she can achieve all the goals that she has here.

"But that remains to be seen, you know, based on the experiences she's already had in the past.”

Mitchell is once again leading the Fever in scoring for the fifth straight year with 17.7 points per game. She is the franchise's second all-time leading scorer behind legend Tamika Catchings.
