In a surprising move, the Los Angeles Rams have waived cornerback Jerry Jacobs with an injury settlement, ending his brief stint with the team. This decision follows a series of unfortunate events for the Rams' secondary, including Derion Kendrick’s ACL tear and Darious Williams' hamstring injury.

Jacobs, who was brought in to provide depth, has now been released after less than a month in Los Angeles, raising questions about the team’s future plans for their cornerback position.

Jerry Jacobs' time with the Los Angeles Rams was cut short due to a recent injury settlement. The cornerback, signed to bolster the Rams' defensive backfield following significant injuries to Derion Kendrick and Darious Williams, has been released less than a month into his tenure. The release comes as part of an agreed-upon compensation arrangement, after which Jacobs will be free to sign with another team.

Jacobs' football journey began at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Arkansas State in 2018. His debut season there was notable, with 31 tackles, four interceptions, and eight pass deflections, earning him a spot on the second-team All-Sun Belt. However, his promising career faced setbacks due to injuries, including a torn ACL in 2019 that curtailed his season after just four games.

Following his stint at Arkansas State, Jacobs transferred to Arkansas but played only five games before opting out to prepare for the NFL Draft. Despite his draft hopes, Jacobs went undrafted and subsequently signed with the Detroit Lions in 2021.

He made a strong impact with Detroit, including a standout game against the Green Bay Packers where he intercepted two passes, helping the Lions secure a 34-20 victory. His NFL career has seen him record 131 tackles, 23 pass deflections, four interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Jacobs' tenure with the Lions included a promising start before another ACL injury in Week 14 of the 2022 season. Despite these setbacks, he was a starter for the Lions in the 2023 season until another knee injury forced him to leave early.

The Rams’ decision to part ways with Jacobs is particularly puzzling given their current cornerback situation. With Kendrick out for the season and Williams still sidelined, the Rams are left with significant gaps in their secondary.

Analysts like Blaine Grisak of SBNation have suggested that undrafted rookie Josh Wallace has impressed during training camp, but the team’s cornerback depth remains a concern.

Jerry Jacobs’ quick exit from the Rams leaves the team with a pressing need to address their cornerback position. As the Rams aim to build on last season’s performance, finding a reliable replacement will be crucial.

With Kendrick’s season-ending injury and Williams’ uncertain return, Los Angeles must navigate these challenges carefully to strengthen their defensive backfield and secure a successful season.
