As the 2024 NFL season approaches, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been identified by CBS Sports as a potential trade destination for a veteran backup quarterback.

This mention comes after the Bucs' backup quarterbacks, Kyle Trask and John Wolford , delivered underwhelming performances in the preseason, raising questions about the team’s depth at the position.

In a report by Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, Tampa Bay was included in a list of teams that could benefit from adding an experienced backup quarterback. The suggestion centers on Taylor Heinicke , currently with the Atlanta Falcons , as a possible candidate. Heinicke, known for his playoff experience and his strong showing against the Buccaneers during their 2020 Super Bowl run, could offer a seasoned presence behind starting quarterback Baker Mayfield .

However, a trade between divisional rivals is always tricky, and the Buccaneers have not indicated that they are actively pursuing a move.

Through two preseason games, neither Trask nor Wolford has solidified their role as a reliable backup. Trask has completed 24 of 39 passes for 252 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, while Wolford has completed 19 of 32 passes for 183 yards without finding the end zone. These performances have prompted speculation about whether the Buccaneers might consider bolstering their quarterback room before the regular season begins.

Despite the speculation, the likelihood of a trade for Heinicke remains uncertain. While he would bring valuable experience to the Buccaneers' roster, the complexities of trading within the NFC South and the team’s current stance on their quarterback situation suggest that a deal may not be imminent.

As the preseason concludes, the Buccaneers will have to decide whether their current quarterback depth is sufficient or if further moves are needed. CBS Sports' mention of Tampa Bay as a potential trade destination adds an interesting layer to the ongoing discussion about the team’s readiness for the 2024 season.
