Chicago fan opts for QB Tyson Bagent over Caleb Williams to lead offense

Tyson Bagent over Caleb Williams? No way an actual Chicago Bears fan wants that, right?

    Wrong, apparently.

Mark Grote during "Training Camp Live" on 670 The Score received a call from a man named Bob, who shared his opinion on the quarterback position for the Bears. He opted for the backup to start over the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The "Bernstein & Holmes Show" revisited the hot take on Tuesday, before the third episode of "Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Chicago Bears" was released.

Here's the conversation between Bob and Grote on Monday night:

Bob : "I understand that the second team of the Bengals played the entire game [on Saturday]. Caleb Williams seemed to struggle in the time that he was in there. And Tyson Bagent seemed to be very productive, efficient, precision passes, OK, I'm going to make a few comments and statements and then I'll ask you a couple of questions at the end. No one talks about that, OK."

Grote : "Hold on Bob, nobody talks about what?"

Bob : "The efficiency of Tyson Bagent in the last game."

Grote : "I think we spent a lot of time talking about [Bagent] last game. Go ahead Bob, I'm being defensive, I'm sorry. Go ahead Bob."

Bob : "[Bagent] does have NFL experience with, I don't know, two or three games [last year]... Anyway, we tried to get away from Justin Fields and the splash play, it seems like Caleb Williams is good for the splash plays, but Tyson Bagent is more efficient. So, those are my, you know, statements... here's my question: the last couple, few years — Las Vegas [betting odds] has the Bears 8.5 victories over/under, I've asked for the last four years, are you over or under, you always pick over, the Vegas line, and you were incorrect. Eight-and-a-half wins, are you over or under?"

Grote responded with over, but then Bob the caller asked another question that could be considered one of the hottest takes of the 2024 NFL season so far.

"What game do you believe that Tyson Bagent will replace Caleb Williams for performance reasons, not for injuries, what game do you predict?" Bob asked.

His question was met with laughs and a stern "Bob" from Grote.

"If we ever get to a point where that is the solution to the problem, all is lost... we can just shut down the show," Laurence Holmes commented about the take on Tuesday.

Bob was likely alluding to the fact that Williams and the Bears offense struggled the first three drives against Cincinnati at Soldier Field on Saturday, but the latest episode of "Hard Knocks" provides a big reason why.

Williams' audio in his helmet wasn't coming in clearly for playcalls, and it didn't get fixed until before the final two drives of Williams' day. He then led the Bears down the field that resulted in a field goal and then a 7-yard touchdown run by Williams before the first half expired.

There's no question Bagent — who was playing in front of 80 family and friends — had a terrific performance, as he completed 7-of-8 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

The biggest difference between the two quarterbacks is the fact that while Bagent can do a lot of things well for the Bears, Williams' ability to create magic out of nothing sets him apart. He showed that multiple times on Saturday, scrambling out of the pocket, extending the play, and finding open receivers or tucking the ball and running.

Thanks Bob. The sports community always appreciates a scolding hot take.
