The New England Patriots are moving through their final week of training camp ahead of the last preseason game on Sunday against Washington .

As the team tries to put the finishing touches on an offseason that has been productive ahead of the start of a new era, the team's future franchise quarterback seems to be making a late push to start right away.

Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald provided an update on where he believes things stand in the battle between Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett as we sit just over two weeks away from the season in his latest observations article .

"Maye has shown his promise as the 2024 third-overall pick since last Tuesday’s joint practice with the Eagles. He impressed before the Patriots’ backup offensive line crumbled in that session, then he shined in last Thursday’s preseason loss to the Eagles. The rookie’s confidence clearly improved, because he attempted more aggressive throws in practice Saturday, Sunday and Monday," Kyed wrote . "Does this mean that Maye will start Week 1 against the Bengals? In all honesty, probably not. Maye has yet to take a first-team rep in training camp. All of those have gone to Brissett. But if Maye continues to practice well to finish off this week and then outplays Brissett in Sunday’s preseason finale against the Commanders? Well, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Maye could still win the starting job."

Kyed seemed to leave the door open for the possibility of Maye taking over with the understanding that Brissett starting week one is more likely. At the start of camp, however, it felt like a virtual guarantee that Brissett would start, so seeing the distinct mood shift is at the very least a sign that the rookie is developing nicely and doing the things he needs to do.
