Greg McElroy Predicts Five SEC Programs To Make College Football Playoff In 2024

The Southeastern Conference looks as strong as ever entering the 2024 college football season.

Four teams are ranked within the preseason top six in the AP Poll, including Georgia (No. 1), Texas (No. 4), Alabama (No. 5) and Ole Miss (No. 6). The Big Ten also has four mentions within the top 10, including Ohio State (No. 2), Oregon (No. 3), Penn State (No. 8) and Michigan (No. 9).

ESPN's Greg McElroy attempted to predict this year's 12-team College Football Playoff on the latest episode of "Always College Football." He opened by noting that he accurately picked each conference championship winner and the result of the national championship game at this time a year ago.

"There's going to be a lot of teams in the SEC that are in the playoff discussion, okay," McElroy said . "There always has been, there always will be. It's a remarkably deep league. It's a remarkably talented league."

According to the former Alabama quarterback, five SEC Teams will make the expanded playoff format before it's all said and done. McElroy has Georgia beating Texas to secure the SEC Championship crown and draw an automatic bid.

McElroy's SEC picks to make 2024 CFP

No. 1 Georgia (12-1)

No. 6 Texas (10-3)

No. 7 Alabama (10-2)

No. 10 Ole Miss (10-2)

No. 11 LSU (9-3)

McElroy left out multiple conference contenders on his list, including AP No. 11 Missouri, No. 15 Tennessee, No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 20 Texas A&M. We could see a scenario where any of these dark horse programs make a run at a playoff bid themselves.

As far as McElroy's national championship prediction goes, he likes Ohio State to top Georgia to win its first national title since 2014.
