The Kansas City Chiefs have officially begun their Super Bowl defense with the start of NFL training camp and preseason. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is looking to guide the team to a three-peat, which has never been done in the Super Bowl era.

Over the weekend, the Chiefs hosted the Detroit Lions for their second preseason game. Coach Andy Reid gave Mahomes and the starters a few possessions of playing time, and the star from Texas Tech did not disappoint.

On his second and final drive of the game, Mahomes took the snap out of shotgun formation and rolled to his right before flipping the ball behind his back to tight end Travis Kelce for a first down. The play instantly went viral online.

On Wednesday, the NFL released the audio of coach Reid's live reaction to Mahomes wild pass, and he didn't seem too amused.

"In the game, though?" Reid said. "In the game? Okay. Let's go."

Mahomes finished the game, completing eight of his 14 passes for 93 yards. He led the Chiefs down the field on both of his drives, each ending in a field goal.

The Lions wound up defeating the Chiefs 24-23, moving Kansas City to 0-2 in the preseason. But it was the behind-the-back pass that stole the spotlight.

Although the play was exciting, Reid certainly won't allow Mahomes to pull this off in a regular season game. But, at this point, Mahomes might surprise everyone and do it anyway.
