FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — With only days remaining until their preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, the New England Patriots are parting ways with a veteran member of their defensive front.

Less than one month since returning for his second tour of duty with the club, the Pats have released veteran defensive tackle Mike Purcell.

Purcell originally joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the San Francisco 49ers in 2013. Since that time, he has played in 90 games over eight NFL seasons split between the Niners (2014-16) and Denver Broncos (2019-23). He also spent time on several practice squads from 2017-19.

Ironically, Purcell also had a brief stint with the Patriots in 2017. He signed with their practice squad on Oct. 25 but was released the next day. He was then re-signed to the scout team on Nov. 7, before being cut again on Nov. 22.

Throughout his career, the University of Wyoming product has amassed 208 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, four passes-defensed and three fumble recoveries throughout his career. He appeared in 16 games for the Broncos last season, making 10 starts while recording 25 tackles, five quarterback hits and a fumble recovery.

Purcell’s signing came just days after the Pats confirmed that Christian Barmore — the team’s top option at defensive tackle — would be out indefinitely while being treated for blood clots. No timetable has been set for his return.

With Purcell having been released, the Patriots will deploy a positional group consisting of Davon Godchaux, Daniel Ekuale, Armon Watts, Sam Roberts, Trysten Hill, Jeremiah Pharms, Jr, and Josiah Bronson.
