What is Buccaneers' 'Biggest Weapon' On Offense?

    By Adam Schultz,

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offseason has been one of change, but change doesn't always mean bad; it just means different.

With Liam Coen now in charge of the offense after Dave Canales took the head coaching role with the Carolina Panthers, the Buccaneers' offensive players have been busy studying to understand Coen's system .

While some have called Liam's offense complex and hard, the Buccaneers are finally getting a grip on it. With more on Baker Mayfield's shoulders at the line of scrimmage, checking in and out of plays, there is a lot of mental gymnastics for the veteran.

But what is the offense's biggest strength? Mayfield gave his answer.

"Versatility," Mayfield said . "I think with us improving the running game and bringing the pieces back that we have at receiver, and then adding a few pieces, as well, just in the skill group department, I think versatility is going to be our biggest weapon. Lining up and having teams decide how they want to defend us. Our guys have to be able to react and adapt to that. We're teaching the game right now and I think our guys are going to be able to handle that."

While the Buccaneers haven't gotten much love from outside the building this offseason, they have the nucleus of a playoff team.

Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Rachaad White, Bucky Irving, Jalen McMillan, Trey Palmer, and Graham Barton highlight the strength on the offensive side of the ball.

Of course, it all starts and stops with Baker. Throughout camp, there have been good days and bad, but there have been more positive ones of late, with a McMillan touchdown the highlight of Tampa Bay's joint practice with the Miami Dolphins.

Seeing Coen's system in real NFL action will be interesting. With so much going on pre-snap, it will be fascinating to see how Mayfield adjusts to that.

They have the pieces on offense to cause problems for defenses, and it remains to be seen if Tampa Bay's "biggest weapon" will be enough for them to return to the postseason in 2024.
