In a surprising move on the final day of training camp, the Philadelphia Eagles released veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah. The cut comes just one day after Uzomah was getting first-team reps in practice while starter Dallas Goedert sat out with an oblique injury.

Uzomah, a fifth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015, signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in April. He was competing for the backup tight end role behind Goedert and 2022 draft pick Grant Calcaterra.

Uzomah, 30, has 192 catches for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns over his nine-year NFL career, the first seven seasons with the Bengals and the last two with the New York Jets. He had a strong postseason in 2021, hauling in 15 catches for 146 yards and a touchdown as the Bengals reached the Super Bowl.

However, Uzomah struggled in the preseason, playing 11 offensive snaps in the first two games and recording just one catch for three yards. His 41.4 Pro Football Focus grade ranked 131st out of 138 tight ends this preseason.

The Eagles also have tight ends Albert Okwuegbunam Jr., E.J. Jenkins, Kevin Foelsch, and Armani Rogers competing for roster spots behind Goedert and Calcaterra. Jenkins had a strong performance last week against the Patriots, catching five passes for 47 yards.

The Eagles must trim their roster down to 53 players by the league's 4 p.m. ET deadline on Tuesday, August 29. With Uzomah's release, the competition at tight end has become even more heated heading into the final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.
