Paul Finebaum Names No. 1 Team SEC Should Target For Conference Realignment

This college football offseason has been marked by significant changes, including the expansion of the College Football Playoff from four teams to 12 teams. Additionally, several conferences have gained and lost teams to other conferences.

However, the next question is whether more change could be coming in the future. ESPN's Paul Finebaum thinks more conference realignment is possible, but we are probably a few years away. He has said that the North Carolina Tar Heels will be at the top of the SEC's list if that happens.

"I've heard from people in the SEC, that in a perfect world, and they could legally go after some schools, North Carolina would likely be No. 1," Finebaum said. "After that, it's a mystery. It just feels like we are a couple of years away from that."

The conversation began when reports emerged about the ACC possibly losing some key members. This summer, ESPN reported that the Florida State Seminoles filed a lawsuit against the ACC over its Grant of Rights agreement. The Clemson Tigers have also appeared to join the fight to leave the ACC early.

Should that scenario occur, several other teams may consider leaving, similar to what happened with the Pac-12 when USC and UCLA announced their departure to the Big Ten. Finebaum believes the SEC would have the Tar Heels at the top of its list as its next expansion member in that situation.
