The Tampa Bay Buccaneers players and coaches have made it known they are embracing the underdog role this year after the Atlanta Falcons got all the preseason hype after signing quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency and making a couple of splash moves on defense.

The Buccaneers have every right to feel disrespected after winning the NFC South for the last three seasons and being the only team in the division to make real noise in the playoffs in any of those years.

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield spoke to the media Tuesday and thinks the team should focus on getting better each day:

"Atlanta has made some big splashes free agency-wise, and everybody is excited about it, but everybody was excited about the Saints doing the same thing last year," Mayfield said. "Todd [Bowles] mentions it almost every day compete against yourself, try to get better each day, take care of the small things one step at a time, and see where you're at in the end."

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Falcons are the favorite to win the NFC South at -145 odds, and the Buccaneers are listed at +350.

The division race will be difficult, but the Bucs locked down Mayfield to a new lucrative deal that ensures he is the franchise guy.

Mayfield led the Buccaneers to a division crown last year after winning five of the last six regular season games. He understands how important it is for the team to hit their stride at the end of the year.

"We started to do the little things right and that's why we're harping on everybody doing their job and being extremely focused on the details even more so this year," Mayfield said. "That's why I think we've improved as the offseason and training camp goes on ."
