Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has garnered attention not just for his play on the field but for his physical transformation ahead of the 2024 season. Mayfield, who previously stated he was "in the best shape I’ve been in a long time," could be looking to take more risks this season, according to teammate Rachaad White .

During a recent interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, White hinted at the possibility of Mayfield playing more aggressively due to his improved physical condition.

"Man, him coming in here just shaving weight and just looking good, looking more explosive, making more plays outside the pocket and stuff like that," White said . "He’s been awesome in extending plays. I mean, he looks like an action figure."

While Mayfield’s enhanced mobility and willingness to make plays outside the pocket could provide a spark for the Buccaneers’ offense, it also raises concerns.

Mayfield, listed at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, has a history of injuries that have hampered his performance in previous seasons. Notably, his 2021 season with the Cleveland Browns ended poorly due to a serious shoulder injury, and last season, he dealt with rib and ankle injuries while guiding Tampa Bay to a wild-card playoff victory.

Despite these concerns, Mayfield’s commitment to his physical conditioning is evident. The Buccaneers recognized his potential by rewarding him with a new three-year contract in March, but with millions on the line and a tough season ahead, Mayfield still has much to prove.

As the Buccaneers prepare for their regular-season opener against the Washington Commanders on September 8, all eyes will be on Mayfield to see if his newfound physicality translates into more dynamic—and potentially riskier—play on the field.
