Stephen A. Smith's Harsh Truth Towards Russell Wilson Captures Attention

    By Cole Sullivan,

Stephen A. Smith left nothing unsaid during ESPN's First Take Thursday when talking about Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson and his lack of enthusiasm and competitiveness portrayed to the media when it comes to winning a starting job in Pittsburgh.

Wilson is currently in a quarterback battle with Justin Fields , and neither has looked relatively good in any preseason or training camp showings thus far.

Wilson's last two seasons in Denver with the Broncos were major letdowns, and he has been trending in the wrong direction since leaving Seattle.

Smith, a known Steelers fan, wasn't holding back on the lack of drive he has been seeing from Wilson ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

"I'm going to say it on national television. Russell Wilson you're beginning to piss me off. You stunk last year. You are getting paid $37.8 million to go away. The Denver Broncos are willing to eat nearly $38 million dollars to get rid of you, and you sitting there fighting for a starting job with Justin Fields." Smith said.

He later added, "Sitting there with a smile on his face, talking about everybody needs to relax; you ain't Aaron Rodgers! You don't get to say that. You have to show up. The only good thing you brought to Denver was Ciara."

A harsh perspective that Smith laid in on Wilson for. But the fact of the matter is, Wilson, who has underachieved since leaving Seattle, is in desperate need of rejuvenating his career, and he may not receive another opportunity if he can't live up to expectations in Pittsburgh.

Over his last two seasons in Denver, Wilson has tallied 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions but missed the playoffs both years. At one point last season, Sean Payton benched him.

Nontheless, his moment is now, despite the animosity and harshness in Stephen A. Smith's statement. He may not be wrong.
