Steelers Could Play Both Russell Wilson & Justin Fields

Ever since Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson got hurt to start training camp, the current quarterback controversy has been brewing. The longer he sat on the sidelines and allowed Justin Fields to get the first team reps, build a rapport with his teammates and get in a groove, the louder the noise got.

Aside from a couple of bad snap exchanges, Fields played well in his first preseason game. Last week, both Wilson and Fields struggled, but Fields was still clearly better than the former Wisconsin Badger.

On Wednesday night, while appearing on “The Insiders”, Ian Rapoport suggested that coach Mike Tomlin could play both quarterbacks this season.

“Neither quarterback has really taken this thing and grabbed it,” Rapoport said . “So, if you’re Mike Tomlin, one, I would imagine this is probably a little frustrating that training camp at the quarterback position has not gone as you thought.

“But two, you really do have an open mind for what are you gonna see in this game? Does anyone jump out at you and say, this guy has to be the starter?”

We get what Rapoport is saying here, but this has never really worked in the past when other teams have tried it. Not for any length of time anyway. Wilson and Fields have vastly different skillsets so moving them in and out means the whole offense has to be adjusted every time.

“I would also add that this looks like a situation where we are probably going to see both quarterbacks on the field at some point this season, maybe on the field at some point in the same game, maybe multiple times,” Rapoport continued.

“A very unsettled quarterback situation, and that looks like that’s the way it’s gonna be this year, judging by camp.”

Specialized packages would probably work, but much like the “wildcat” before, it would get sniffed out pretty quickly after it’s on tape.

The Steelers have one final preseason game on the road at Detroit at 12:00 p.m. EST on Saturday to get this figured out.

For now, we wait and see.
