Does Jerry Want Lance to Beat Out Rush?

The Dallas Cowboys' offseason has been dominated by the contract status of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, but the development of Trey Lance is also high on the list.
After an up-and-down first preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, Lance returned against the Las Vegas Raiders and looked far more comfortable in Mike McCarthy's offense.
Of course, his efforts aren't enough for us to crown him QB2 over Cooper Rush, but Lance's arrow is trending in the right direction.
“I saw obvious improvement and that's promising because he does have a lot of improvement to have,” owner Jerry Jones said of Lance. “But he's got all the tools, and he's got the mental, you saw that mental clicking in and adjustments that he hadn't made, let's say, as early as the week before, so that's pretty promising the way he played there out there Saturday.”
With Jerry already stating that Lance is "going to be on the 53," he is expected to again see the majority of snaps in Dallas' final preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
What does Lance have to do to usurp Cooper Rush in the quarterback depth chart? That is up for debate, but Lance is at least showing positive signs of operating in McCarthy's offense.
Regarding McCarthy's thoughts on finalizing the quarterback depth chart, he remained tight-lipped on the subject.
"You play this all the way out," McCarthy said. "You can never have enough good quarterbacks, and we got three good ones. We're fortunate."
There is a real-life bottom line here: The Cowboys invested a fourth-round pick to trade for high-upside Lance, while Rush is a reliable guy who they've cut and then recalled often. All things considered, Dallas "wants'' Lance to win the job outright. ... but that certainly hasn't happened to this point.
