The New York Mets’ Top Prospect is Finally on the Way Back

Yesterday, Williams played his first game in more than three months. He got a hit and a stolen base in his first rehab start.

Jett Williams came into this season as a consensus top 50 prospect. Williams was New York’s first round pick in 2022 and he immediately was one of the Mets’ top prospects.

Williams excelled in 2023 when he was just 19 years old. Williams played his first 79 games for the St. Lucie Mets. Williams did very well there and earned a promotion to Brooklyn.

Williams really turned heads at A+ Brooklyn. He had a 1.018 OPS in 36 games. He had more walks than strikeouts.

Williams was called up to AA Binghamton for the final six games of the season. He struggled there in limited appearances. Williams finished 2023 with an .876 OPS. He walked 104 times, second among all minor league players. Williams’s ability to work walks really impressed scouts. He has elite plate discipline and rarely chases outside the zone.

Williams is an elite base runner. He often takes extra bases. He also stole 45 bases.

Williams started 2024 in AA. He struggled in 11 games as he dealt with wrist pain. Eventually, he had surgery on the injured wrist.

It has been a very disappointing year for the top prospect. The expectation had been that Williams would end this year in Syracuse or that he could even be a late season call-up to the major league team. He definitely seemed to be on track to be a part of the Mets’ 2025 major league team. Instead, Williams will finish this year in AA and start next year in Syracuse.

The good news for Williams is that he is still very young. The 20 year old has a lot of time to grow into his body and become the hitter the Mets think he can be.
