Did Howie Roseman 'Win the Trade'?

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a significant move to bolster their receiving corps, trading for former Washington Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson. The deal addresses one of the Eagles' biggest question marks heading into the 2024 season—the WR3 position.

In the trade, Philadelphia sent a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-round picks to Washington in exchange for Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick. The move comes as the Eagles look to build on their already formidable offense.

Throughout the summer, Philadelphia had been experimenting with various options at the WR3 spot. Veterans Parris Campbell and Britain Covey, along with rookie Johnny Wilson, had all seen first-team reps. However, the acquisition of Dotson brings a level of pedigree and potential that the Eagles hope will elevate their passing game even further.

Dotson, a former first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, joins an impressive receiving group led by star wideouts A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Both Brown and Smith recently signed long-term contract extensions, solidifying the Eagles' commitment to a high-powered passing attack.

The addition of Dotson provides quarterback Jalen Hurts with yet another weapon in an offense that already features running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Dallas Goedert. This move clearly signals the Eagles' intent to maintain their status as one of the NFL's most potent offenses.

In his two seasons with Washington, Dotson showed flashes of the talent that made him a first-round selection. Last year, he recorded 49 receptions for 518 yards and four touchdowns. While these numbers may not jump off the page, the Eagles are betting on Dotson's ability to thrive in their system alongside Brown and Smith.

The trade also represents a fresh start for Dotson, who hadn't quite lived up to expectations in Washington. Despite catching 84 passes for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns in 29 career games, Dotson struggled to establish himself as a consistent threat opposite Terry McLaurin.

As the Eagles integrate Dotson into their offense, they'll look to maximize his skills, particularly from the slot position. However, there are areas where improvement is needed, including his play strength and consistency. Dotson's 7.4% drop percentage last season (10th highest in the NFL) is an area the Eagles' coaching staff will undoubtedly focus on.

With the addition of Dotson, the Eagles' starting offense is set. All eyes are now on the final preseason game against Minnesota on Saturday, followed by the season opener against the Green Bay Packers in Brazil on September 6th.
