The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a surprising roster move by designating veteran outfielder Jason Heyward for assignment. This decision comes as the team activates Chris Taylor from the injured list, creating a crunch in their roster.

Heyward, who has played 187 games for the Dodgers over the past two seasons, had a strong showing in 2023, hitting .269 with 15 home runs. However, his performance dipped this season, with a batting average of .208 and six home runs.

The recent addition of outfielder Kevin Kiermaier, known for his defensive skills and left-handed batting, made Heyward less essential to the team.

The Dodgers faced a tough choice between keeping Heyward, Kiermaier, or utility player Kiké Hernández. Ultimately, they prioritized Kiermaier's defensive capabilities and Hernández's versatility, leading to Heyward's departure.

While Heyward has been a respected presence in the clubhouse and a close friend of All-Star Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers are focused on winning now. This decision reflects their commitment to optimizing their roster for the postseason.

Heyward will now enter waivers, and it's unlikely any team will claim him due to the financial implications of his $9 million salary. Instead, he may become a free agent, allowing him to seek a new team as the postseason approaches.

Despite not being the player he once was, Heyward has shown he can still contribute, including a recent pinch-hit home run against the Seattle Mariners. As the Dodgers continue to compete for the NL West title, they are also navigating the challenges of a crowded roster.
