The Los Angeles Chargers have signed tight end Isaac Rex following a successful workout on Wednesday. This move comes as the team looks to bolster its roster ahead of the upcoming season.

Rex, who played five seasons at Brigham Young University, was initially signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions earlier this year.

During his college career, he recorded 112 receptions for 1,385 yards and 24 touchdowns, with his standout season occurring in 2020 when he caught 37 passes for 479 yards and 12 touchdowns.

To make room for Rex, the Chargers released defensive lineman Micheal Mason.

With Rex joining the tight end group, the team now has eight players at that position, including fellow undrafted free agents Luke Benson and Zach Heins, as well as Tucker Fisk, who has also played fullback.

While somewhat productive in college, Rex’s draft stock was hurt by some underwhelming measurables, including a 4.96 in the forty-yard dash, a 5.00 in the short shuttle, and a 27-inch vertical jump.

Still, he made a number of highlight-reel catches while with the Cougars and there’s something to be said about guys who are better football players than they are athletes.

The Chargers are hoping he can contribute positively to their offense this season.

The tight end position is going to be a massive key to what Jim Harbaugh wants to do on offense with running the ball and being very physical at the line of scrimmage. Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst will get the majority of the reps at the position, but Rex is sure to help where needed.
