The San Diego Padres have officially placed Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 60-day injured list, marking a significant setback for the team. This move comes as Tatis continues to recover from a right femoral stress reaction that has kept him sidelined since June 22.

With the postseason approaching, Tatis's timeline for recovery is becoming increasingly critical. The Padres made the roster change on Wednesday, coinciding with the 60-day mark since Tatis was first placed on the injured list. This procedural move allows the team to open a spot for shortstop Mason McCoy, who was called up from the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas.

Before his injury, Tatis was a key player for the Padres, leading the team with 14 home runs. Despite being out for over a month, he remains tied for fifth on the team in home runs, just six behind co-leaders Manny Machado and Jurickson Profar.

While Tatis has not yet been cleared for a minor league rehab assignment, he has been making progress in his recovery. Reports indicate that he has been doing light running and playing catch, as well as hitting in the batting cage. However, there is still no set timeline for his return to the Major Leagues.

Mason McCoy, who made his major league debut on the same day as Tatis's move to the injured list, recorded his first hit against the Minnesota Twins. McCoy has one season of major league experience, having played six games with the Blue Jays last year.

Tatis's placement on the 60-day injured list ensures he will remain eligible to return to the 40-man roster once he is healthy enough to play again.
