Caitlin Clark's 'Spicy' Incident With Skylar Diggins-Smith Draws Blunt Response From Sue Bird

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are in the midst of a five-day break after defeating the Seattle Storm over the past weekend 92-75. The Fever avoided a sweep with their first win over the Storm, losing the initial three matchups.

Towards the end of the game, Clark was seen hyping up the crowd near the Seattle bench during a timeout. Storm guard Skylar Diggins-Smith came up behind Clark and shouldered her out of the way. Clark ignored the subtle shove and kept pumping up the Fever crowd.

Storm legend Sue Bird was a fan of the minor altercation between the two stars.

In the most recent episode of "Love and Basketball," Bird and former soccer star Megan Rapinoe discussed the incident, calling the moment "spicy."

"There was some video circulating," Bird said. "It seems like Caitlin, in her getting the crowd hype, stumbled, maybe got nudged a little bit there by Skylar, stumbled into the Storm bench area and just kept it moving. Things got a little spicy. None of this is surprising to me."

Bird then went on to note what she would have said to Diggins-Smith if she were in Clark's shoes.

"If I'm Caitlin, I'm like, 'Yeah, whatever. You're bad. I'm on my way to my bench,' Bird continued. "If I'm the Storm, I'm like, 'Get the f*** out of here, yeah, get the f*** out of here.' I think that's just the chippiness, the spiciness you like to see in sports. In my mind, all benign."

Diggins-Smith is in her first season with Seattle. In 28 games this season, the former Notre Dame star is averaging 13.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 6.3 assists in 31.3 minutes per game.

Prior to joining the Storm, Diggins-Smith played for the Tulsa Shock, Dallas Wings and Phoenix Mercury. She is a six-time WNBA All-Star and a four-time All-WNBA first-team member.
