As the NFL regular season approaches, teams must keep their key and star players healthy the best they can.

The Detroit Lions had a scare on Wednesday after one of those types of players left practice early with an injury.

Offensive tackle Penei Sewell 's injury has been determined to be a minor ankle injury and it's not believed to be serious, according to the team.

ESPN's Eric Woodyard reports it was a rolled ankle, citing team sources. Sewell received an MRI and it came back negative.

Sewell ranked first in the NFL in run-blocking grade (93.1) and overall grade (90.7) last season, according to Pro Football Focus. He also ranked 16th overall in pass blocking grade (78.1).

The 23-year-old is one of the main keys on the offensive line and has been since he was drafted by the Lions seventh overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

This spring, Sewell signed a four-year, $112 million extension that keeps him in Detroit through the 2029 season.

He's expected to be ready by the team's regular season opener for Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 8.
