The San Diego Padres have re-signed veteran pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor league deal just days after designating him for assignment.

This marks the second time in three months that the Padres have brought Edwards back into the fold.

Edwards was initially designated for assignment on August 12 and opted for free agency shortly after clearing waivers. The team announced his return on their transactions page recently.

This new contract represents Edwards' third stint with the Padres. In his previous appearance this season, he pitched in just one game without recording an out, allowing three batters to reach base.

However, he has shown solid performance in Triple-A, posting a 3.30 ERA across his time with the Padres' and Cubs' affiliates.

Before rejoining the Padres, Edwards had not played in the majors since last season with the Washington Nationals, where he had a 3.69 ERA over 32 games.

His 2022 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, but he had a respectable 3.07 ERA in 93.2 innings over two seasons with the Nationals.

At 32 years old, Edwards has a decade of big league experience, totaling 280 innings with teams including the Cubs, Nationals, Padres, Blue Jays, Mariners, and Braves.

He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2011 and made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 2015, contributing to their 2016 World Series victory.

Edwards' first stint with the Padres in 2019 was less successful, as he struggled with a 32.40 ERA in just 1.2 innings.

After that season, he became a free agent and signed with the Mariners.

Since then, he has played for the Braves and Blue Jays before returning to the Cubs' minor league system, where he excelled with a 1.85 ERA in 20 appearances.

With the Padres' bullpen recently bolstered by new additions, it may be challenging for Edwards to secure a spot. However, he could find an opportunity when rosters expand later in the season.
