Dalton Schultz is in his second year with the Houston Texans. Schultz was selected in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cowboys and played five seasons in Dallas..

Dalton spoke to the media this week on his connection with quarterback C.J. Stroud and the importance of consistency in the offense.

On his role and how important it can be for making things go in this offense

Dalton: I mean all I'm trying to do is be consistent. I know the challenges that's put on defenses with a scheme like ours and honestly a receiving core like we have. I'm just trying to be available. I’ve said that from the time that I got here. I got with C.J. very early and I started to build that trust and that’s something I'm just trying to keep building with him. I think having a guy that he can count on, that’s all I'm trying to be.

On having an even deeper connection with C.J. this year because you've played a lot together

Dalton: Yeah, and I think early he was a guy that I could tell pretty early from the conversations that he knows ball. Like he understands football just from a big picture scale. Some of those things, I didn’t necessarily hear what he wanted but I knew he was trying to say something. We just found a way to be on the same page just by seeing the same picture on the back end. Things like that and some of them aren't necessarily planned all of the time, but like when you're able to just get on the same page and make it right however it is, that's special when you have a quarterback that can do that.

On how having WR Tank Dell and WR Stefon Diggs open things up for him

Dalton: It's big. Whenever you have vertical threats, teams drop deeper. Linebackers, now their hooks drop are 12 yards instead of eight yards. It affects everything when they feel that vertical push, the guys are trying to stay on top and when you got two burners and add Nico to that mix. Those are three guys that can stretch the field. It opens up stuff underneath sometimes in certain coverages. Honestly, it creates space for us and the backs and I love having it. Playing our defense in practice is hard because they are in your hip all the time whether it's zone or man. It's frustrating but then you get to some games and it's like teams are just spot dropping and you feel that space . It’s very beneficial for sure.
