Bills Searching for 'Organic' Leadership on Defense

All-Pro linebacker Matt Milano is expected to be lost for the entire season with a torn biceps injury.

Tre'Davious White, Jordan Poyer, and Micah Hyde are all no longer with the defensive unit for the Buffalo Bills.

So how exactly is Buffalo expected to be experienced enough at this point right now?

Whatever the Bills end up doing in the leadership department won't simply be solved right away, though. At least according to defensive coordinator Bobby Babich.

"We're not going to force anything," Babich said. "That's got to be kind of an organic process as far as just, it'll play out the way it's supposed to play out, because there are a lot of things that go into leadership… I already see some people stepping up. It'll really take form if it hasn't already, it's going to take form when it's ready."

Babich has helped Buffalo's defense become one of the more consistent in the league but 2024 might be his toughest task yet with the defense getting considerably younger at key positions over the entire unit.

It also doesn't help that Milano was lost for the year in the middle of a practice.

Finding leaders in an organic way won't be easy overall and may take time for the Bills. For Babich, it's the only way though to keep this group among the best in football.
