WATCH: Chiefs Score TD vs. Bears After Series of Turnovers in Preseason Game 3

The Kansas City Chiefs have finally lit the Arrowhead Stadium scoreboard in their preseason finale on Thursday night.

Traveling 50 yards on just three plays, Chiefs running back Carson Steele carried the ball 31 yards for what was thought to be a touchdown. However, a review saw him stopped at the Chicago one-yard marker. Steele would take the ball in for a single-yard run to cut Chicago’s lead to 10-7.

It took a wild series of events to arrive at that point.

For a brief moment, the Chiefs appeared to have received the break for which they had been searching during their preseason finale against the Chicago Bears — before their first touchdown, that is.

With the Chiefs about to concede yet another failed offensive drive, Kansas City punter Matt Araiza booted a 40-yard punt to the Chicago 10-yard line. Yet, Bears returner DeAndre Carter muffed the punt which was recovered by Kansas City Safety Jaden Hicks.

Unfortunately for the home team, Chiefs reserve quarterback Chris Oladukon tossed an interception on 2nd-and-Goal from the Chicago 3-yard line. Bears cornerback Reddy Steward picked the pass intended for Kansas City rookie tight end Jared Wiley, preserving the Bears 10-0 lead.

Following a 59-yard missed field goal by kicker Harrison Butker, Bears reserve quarterback Brett Rypien had increased Chicago’s lead by leading the club on a 10-play, 37-yard drive.

Despite the series culminating in a 32-yard field goal from Chicago kicker Cairo Santos increasing their deficit to 10 points, the Chiefs nearly found themselves down by two touchdowns. Facing a 3rd-and-10 from the Chiefs’ 10-yard line, Rypien had seemingly completed a short-right pass to running back Ian Wheeler for the score. However, the play was nullified as an illegal forward pass.

At that time, Santos split the uprights on fourth down to give the Bears a 10-0 lead earlier in the second quarter.

The Chiefs are about to embark on a journey that they hope will lead them to heights no team in the modern NFL era has previously been — a Super Bowl championship three-peat. As a three-time Super Bowl Champion (including three Super Bowl MVPs,) two-time NFL MVP, and three-time All-Pro, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already had the career about which most athletes can only dream.

At age 28, he is just entering the prime of his career. His top target, tight end Travis Kelce is a nine-time Pro Bowler and a seven-time All-Pro with four first-team nods. The Chiefs have also upgraded their vertical passing game by adding rookie speedster Xavier Worthy.

Still, fans and media alike should give rightful credit to coordinator Steve Spagnoulo’s defense, whose blitz-heavy schemes have helped defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie thrive.

After Thursday night’s preseason finale, the Chiefs will next return to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to host the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5.
