The San Diego Padres have made a surprising move by sending their most-utilized starting pitcher, Matt Waldron, to Triple-A El Paso. This decision comes as the team remains in the thick of playoff contention.

Waldron, 27, has struggled recently, posting a record of 7-11 with a 4.79 ERA this season. His performance has declined significantly over the past two months, with his ERA climbing from a season-low of 3.43 on June 24. In his last ten starts, he has managed only two wins against five losses, with an alarming 7.09 ERA and 12 home runs allowed. His most recent outing against the Minnesota Twins was particularly rough, as he allowed 12 hits and 10 runs in just 4.1 innings.

Despite leading the team in starts with 26 and ranking second in innings pitched with 142.2, Waldron's recent form prompted the Padres to make this move. As of now, the Padres hold a 72-56 record and sit in second place in the National League West, with strong playoff odds.
