Spurs Rank High In Title Chase 'Window'?

The San Antonio Spurs have the highest winning percentage of the century despite missing the playoffs since 2019. Is a five-year drought long enough, or will it take the Spurs, building around Victor Wembanyama, a few more years to compete legitimately? Bleacher Report recently published an exercise ranking every team's chances of winning a championship in three years. Where do the Spurs land?

Despite the Los Angeles Lakers having LeBron James and Anthony Davis as its two-headed monster, the Spurs rank ahead of the 2024 playoff team. Firstly, while the Lakers are the expected better team than the Spurs for the 2024-25 season, James turns 40 in December, and Davis, as the leading player, doesn't net a championship.

In a three-year window, although the Spurs won't likely sniff the NBA Finals, they'll probably clinch a playoff spot while the Lakers traverse a reality without James.

In addition to the Lakers, the Bleacher Report also ranked the Spurs higher than a team that has made two NBA Finals appearances in the last four years.

The Miami Heat are in trouble. Pat Riley didn't accomplish anything of note during the 2024 offseason, and the team's heart, Jimmy Butler, turns 35 in September. Frankly, the Heat made the 2024 playoffs by the grip of their teeth.

Projecting a missed postseason for a franchise with two consecutive NBA Play-In tournament appearances makes for a safe assessment.

Wembanyama provides the Spurs with a bright future. However, an NBA championship comes with proper building, and the Spurs look to have at least one more year of lottery luck in their plans.
