The Chicago Bears appear poised to put their preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs on ice in the waning moments of the third quarter.

However, the Chiefs are not about to surrender without a fight.

Facing a 34-7 deficit early in the fourth quarter, Chiefs reserve quarterback Ian Book led the club on a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive, culminating in a seven-yard touchdown strike to receiver Cornell Powell. The score cut the Bears lead to 34-14.

Still, Chicago remains in prime position to score the victory in this matchup.

With just over four minutes remaining in the penultimate period of the night, Bears reserve quarterback Austin Reed led his team 66 yards on seven plays for the touchdown to give Chicago a commanding 34-7 lead. Bears running back Velus Jones, Jr. pulled a 39-yard run to the end zone on 2nd-and-9 from the Chiefs’ 39-yard-line.

Earlier in the quarter, Chicago receiver Tommy Sweeney hauled in a six-yard pass from Reed to take a 27-7 advantage over the defending Super Bowl Champions at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs are about to embark on a journey that they hope will lead them to heights no team in the modern NFL era has previously been — a Super Bowl championship three-peat. As a three-time Super Bowl Champion (including three Super Bowl MVPs,) two-time NFL MVP, and three-time All-Pro, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already had the career about which most athletes can only dream.

At age 28, he is just entering the prime of his career. His top target, tight end Travis Kelce is a nine-time Pro Bowler and a seven-time All-Pro with four first-team nods. The Chiefs have also upgraded their vertical passing game by adding rookie speedster Xavier Worthy.

Still, fans and media alike should give rightful credit to coordinator Steve Spagnoulo’s defense, whose blitz-heavy schemes have helped defensive tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie thrive.

After Thursday night’s preseason finale, the Chiefs will next return to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to host the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5.
