Chiefs Cut WR; Could Kadarius Toney Be Next?

It's an under-the-radar move, an end-of-the-roster churn. But it's also the tip of the iceberg and the first drop of a thunderstorm.

The Kansas City Chiefs are cutting undrafted receiver Jaaron Hayek from their injured reserve list after reaching an agreement on an injury settlement on Friday.

Hayek, 22, went undrafted out of Villanova - where he caught 170 passes for 2,744 yards and 29 touchdowns - and of course didn't quite do enough to stick on the 53-man roster that will be finalized in the coming days.

No disrespect to him, but that's an easy one. Now come more challenges, including in the receivers room ... featuring guys the public has heard of. ... namely, Kadarius Toney.

Toney's 2023 season was filled with silly mistakes. The Chiefs signed Marquise Brown and drafted Xavier Worthy. At some point, his pedigree - Toney was the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft - isn't going to be enough.

At some point his speed isn't going to be enough.

It could easily be argued that there are way too many guys on the depth chart for him to stick, way to many guys who have speed in a way that puts them in his class ... but who also have consistency ... and Toney certainly has not provided that.

The Chiefs have tried. We're about to find out of they - and Toney - have failed.
