Kyrie Irving Leads Next Generation in Private Workouts

    By Lance Roberson,

The Dallas Mavericks are in good hands, as Luka Doncic is the superstar, and Kyrie Irving is the steady hand offering support when No. 77 needs it, as well as the calming spirit in the locker room. Despite his reputation in the eyes of some, Irving's demeanor and behavior since donning a Mavs jersey has been a revelation.

And it seems this story follows that spirit, as a recent workout revealed Irving with a few notable young players. Juju Watkins and Olivier-Maxence Prosper.

Judea "Juju" Watkins is a 19-year-old USC basketball star. As a freshman last season, the California native averaged 27 points. Watkins allegedly has the skills to make waves in the next few years as a WNBA star ... with some already making the Caitlin Clark comparison.

Watkins spending time with Irving, even picking his brain for a few minutes, will do wonders for her career based on wisdom alone. The lessons learned from his successes - and maybe from his mistakes - are also keys to his growth.

Not many players can say they relaunched their careers on and off the court like Irving.

Irving's relatively low stock helped allow the Mavericks to trade for the disgruntled star. However, Irving helped the Mavericks make their third NBA Finals in franchise history.

Prosper, a young Mavs prospect, probably shared brief moments with Irving. However, in an intimate, small gym session, the soon-to-be second-year player needs time with stars of Irving's caliber.

Going forward? Without Derrick Jones Jr. on the roster, it's plausible Dallas coach Jason Kidd gives the young prospect spot minutes in 2024-25. Irving's guidance might aid Prosper in future on-court scenarios.

Far removed from his Boston Celtics tenure, Irving as much or more than ever clearly understands the importance of growing the game by mentoring the younger generations of basketball players. The Mavs benefit. And so does the sport.
