The Los Angeles Chargers are making it clear who they want as their backup quarterback this season. With Justin Herbert's plantar fascia injury looming, the team is focusing on Easton Stick as their primary option behind the starter.

Stick has been with the Chargers for several seasons but struggled last year when he had to step in for Herbert. This preseason has not shown much improvement, leading to questions about his readiness for the role.

The Chargers initially had five quarterbacks on their roster but have since trimmed it down to Stick and Luis Perez after releasing Casey Bauman and Max Duggan.

In a recent move, the Chargers announced that Stick will start and play the entire final preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, with Perez serving as his backup only if necessary.

This decision suggests that the team is giving Stick the opportunity to secure the backup position outright.

If Stick fails to impress, the Chargers may look to acquire another quarterback through trade or free agency.

Options like Taylor Heinicke, Malik Willis, or Tyler Huntley could be on their radar, along with potential cuts like Bailey Zappe.

As the preseason wraps up, Stick has one last chance to prove himself. So far, he has completed 13 of 26 passes for 116 yards, with two interceptions and a fumble.

In contrast, Perez has performed slightly better, completing 18 of 32 passes for 139 yards and one fumble.

The Chargers are in a critical period as they finalize their roster. Stick needs to deliver a strong performance against the Cowboys to solidify his spot as the backup quarterback.
