Baron Davis Dunks Triggers Warriors Nostalgia
By Lance Roberson,

Before the dynasty years in the Oracle, the "We Believe" Warriors galvanized the Bay. Despite missing 12 consecutive playoffs, the Warriors fan base showed up to cheer their team. However, after rehiring Don Nelson, the Warriors overachieved for one season. Golden State's social media team recalled Baron Davis' dunk over the Utah Jazz in the 2007 playoffs to pay respect to the unique era.
However, to put the Warriors' underdog season in perspective, you must mention the previous round. In one of the most lopsided defeats in NBA history, the Warriors knocked off the one-seed Dallas Mavericks. But wait, it gets more twisted. Nelson coached the Mavericks until Mark Cuban fired the offensive guru for the defensive-minded, first-time head coach Avery Johnson.
The season before, Dallas lost to the Miami Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals despite holding a 2-0 lead. Despite this heartbreaking defeat, the Mavericks won a franchise-high 67 games in the 2006-07 season. However, one of the few teams Dallas struggled to beat was the Warriors.
Perhaps it was Nelson's knowledge of the Mavericks' strengths and weaknesses, specifically 2007 NBA MVP award winner Dirk Nowitzki.
Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Matt Barnes, and Davis terrorized the Mavericks, as Nelson utilized small-ball lineups to disrupt his former team. To the Mavericks' dismay, Golden State matched up with the one-seed in the postseason. The 2007 NBA MVP averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds on 38 percent shooting from the field and 21 percent from behind the 3-point line.
Nowitzki's numbers were the worst in his playoff career; Barnes claimed the Warriors "punked" the league MVP as Nelson coached his team to a miraculous 4-2 victory in the first round.
After the Warriors dismantled the best team in the NBA, they focused on the Jazz. To the delight of the Warriors' home crowd, Davis dunked over the elite defensive threat Andrei Kirilenko. The Warriors ultimately lost to the Jazz 4-1, but the historic journey gave the loyal fans a year to remember.
